My son Joshua, his fiance Talayna, my son Elijah and I spent the day with my grandson Alexander in Boise today. He is Joshua’s son with his first wife. Alexander is so cute. He’s a little energizer bunny… always going. He loves cars, balloons and bubbles.
This is the first time I’ve been around him since he was about a month old. So, while he was friendly, he didn’t want me picking him up or kissing his cheek. He’d squirm out of my arms.
By the end of the day, he’d come around. We all went outside to watch his cousin ride around in an electric car. Alexander’s grandfather asked him if he wanted to ride, but he didn’t.
He was obviously nervous about the car. He turned around, looked up at me and held out his arms. He let me hold him for quite a while and even let me give him a kiss on his cheek. I thought it was sweet that when he was nervous and unsure of something that he felt comfortable with me and wanted me to be the one to pick him up. His dad was close by but he still chose me.
I was able to get some great photos of him and some videos. I already cherish those because I will only be able to spend one more day with him on July 12th. Then he and his mom are moving to Canada. Anytime I’d think of that while I was with him, I’d get teary. I had to make myself not project into a future of never being with him again. I focused on trusting that somehow, someway, I’ll be able to be a part of his life.
We stayed until about six o’clock and then took the five hour drive back to Salt Lake City. I’ll be staying at Talayna’s parents’ house for a few days. I wanted to spend some time getting to know her and being with Joshua, and give Martina a bit of a break from having me as a house guest.
